Film Review - HER....and some catch up!
So we start a new year with a renewed vigor for more creativity
and art!!
On Wednesday night i was able to go and
screen the movie HER
The long and the short of it for those who
hate the spoilers....this movie was brilliant and beautiful and I really think
you should go see it.
Spike Jonze hits it out of the park in a
awkward look at modern love. It is long at 2 hours and 6 minutes but it
is purposeful in its awkward, uncomfortable, how long can we hang on way!
If you don't like spoilers....run away
now!
*********************************
her tells the story of Theodore Twombly, a
professional letter writer in LA (this movie is set in the future and amazingly
LA looks like Japan!). Theodore is nearing the one year mark on his separation
from his wife and feeling lonely reaches out to others on the net one lonely
night leading to the most embarrassing, awkward and hilarious phone sex I have
ever heard. I am not going to spoil it for you, but lets say I was
laughing out loud while I sat open mouthed at the screen and the 70 year old
later two over from me glared with her arms crossed over her chest! One
of my favourite scenes in the whole movie!
Theodore purchases a copy of the new OS
"OS1" voiced by Scarlet Johannson. After answering a series of
questions, Samantha is booted up and they are happily chatting away.
As the movie moves on you see this beautiful love forming between the two
characters. He is literally falling in love "with his laptop"
as his ex wife points out. It is this beautiful and complex relationship
with all the uncertainty, joy, and crazy that comes with online or long
distance love affairs. Amy Adams plays his next door neighbor and
she and Chris Pratt (a coworker) both deserve a nod as well for their painful
and beautiful support of Theodore.
I am not going to tell you what happens,
because I really really really want you to go see this movie for yourself.
I laughed, cried and was moved by this movie and I don't think its just
because I love....well LOVE!
Spike Jonze and his team hits it out of
the ball park with the cinematography! There is this amazing contrast
between the soft lighting and the pops of pink and red throughout the film.
It creates this feeling of melancholy and hope all at once. Shots
of random items, use of movement and lighting all play to the emotion being portrayed
in the film. There is one moment where the screen goes black...and its
PERFECT for the moment, your sound is heightened as you take away the visual
and you join the characters in this moment of bliss.
I really hope you go see it...and come
back and tell me what you thought!

A little catch up with me...
Christmas and New Years was insane, I am
so sorry I haven't posted since the end of November!
The concerts were amazing, two totally
sold out shows and one pretty full house for the third. Family time was
amazing...I will post later about some creative baking I did!
Let’s get back on the band wagon people...Let’s
make 2014 the most creative and spectacular year so far!
