Okay on to the movie review - ENDERS GAMEhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1731141/

I had not read the book, so I thought the movie was pretty good; my guests who had read the book did not enjoy it as much as I did.   I don't want to spoil it for you, so ditch before you go past the picture!

The movie is about a military command school that is using children to fight a war against an alien race.   Children are used because their minds are more malleable and if they possess the right characteristics, they can be molded into the perfect soldier.   Ender is a 12 year old who has caught the eye of the military higher ups and is being touted as the next saviour of earth.  We watch as he moves his way up the ranks and prepares for the next invasion of the Formix army.

The effects were pretty good and I think seeing it in Imax could be pretty cool if not unsettling for the  zero gravity scenes!!   However, I think this movie suffers because they are unable to jam 6 years worth of time into just 114 minutes.  In the end it is still an enjoyable movie.  I say 3.5 out of 5.

The movie differs from the book (as my sister explained) in that Ender in the book is only 6 and the book spans 6 more years; where as in the movie Ender is around 12 and all happens in less than 30 days.

The movie starts 50 years after an attempted Formix (alien race - look like praying mantis but beefier) invasion on earth.  We open on Ender playing a video game against a larger boy surrounded by other kids.   Ender is being watched by two people who talk about his strategy.    After winning, the monitors want to know how he will deal with rejection so they remove his implant and let him believe he has been kicked out of the program.    The boy who lost attacks Ender and they fight, Ender has nothing to lose and beats him and forces him to stay on the ground bloodied.

This was a test to see how Ender would react, and as such his desire to ensure he "ended all future fights" with the other boy is exactly what the monitors wanted to see.    Now Ender is being taken away to command school.  This is where the movie loses me a bit, through the use of video games and teaching, the army is grooming these kids to be come soldiers who will end the war with the Formix by preemptivley stricking before they can leave the home planet to come back to earth.

In a short time Ender rises through the ranks (through a series of games and fights) and becomes the top student, the only one who can save the human race.   Ender has a dream and when he wakes up he is convinced that the Formix can talk through their minds and he plans on graduating and trying to bring peace not war.  Things are not what they seem however!

....I think you can see where I am going here, but if you don't, I will leave you to watch the movie yourself.    If you need to know how it ends you can always email me!

I think they did they best they could to try and develop Enders character and keep the plot moving, but I understand the book does a better job because of the time span.   In the movie it appears that Ender just floats along and that there really isn't any struggle for him to get to the top.   He literally gets there by knocking out the opponents.  Have to say...Harrison Ford still does a pretty good job for a dude in his 70's!

I hope you consider watching it!  Thanks to Eone Entertainment for the tickets!

This weekend I will be practicing creativity in the kitchen!   Pictures to follow!
